Understanding Sam and Asperger Syndrome

Dolly Gray Award Winner

Understanding Sam and Asperger Syndrome is a children's picture book that tells the story of Sam, a child with Asperger Syndrome, and the challenges he comes by because of his speical needs. The book illustrates some of the behaviors and characteristics that children with Asperger Syndrome have such as he doesn't like his pancakes touching. Sam then becomes diagnosed and has the support from family and friends to help his life run easier and more smoothly. This book includes 10 helpful tips towards children to show them how to respect, accept and treat other children with Asperger Syndrome. I like this book because having a brother of my own with Asperger Syndrome, I know that many strangers did not understand him or his behaviors. It is important for others to understand that children with special needs want to be treated like any other kid in the classroom.
