Return to Sender

Pura Belpre Winner

The book Return to Sender by Julia Alvarez is about a boy named Tyler and his family who must hire Mexican immigrants to work on their farm due to an accident with his father. Tyler is unsure about these workers wondering if they are undocumented or not. He is also curious of a family of three daughters who are proud of their Mexican heritage yet feel very connected to their American life. The story is focused around Tyler and his forming friendship with one of the daughters named Mari despite their differences. I like this story because it focuses on a real life controversy of undocumented migrant workers and their acceptance by the American people.
