This book, The Underneath, is a story of a calico cat who befriends a chained-up hound. These two know they they are supposed to hate each other, but although they are unlikely friends they soon become closer when Ranger the hound urges the cat to stay under the porch with her kittens because of the mean owner Mr. Gar-Face. They are all safe if only they stay underneath the deck, but one curious kitten makes a mistake of leaving the porch which sets off a chain of events that leave the reader captivated. I like this book because it is a story of an unlikely friendship, which sends a message that anyone can be friends no matter their differences from each other. Also, the author formatted this book in a way that it has many short chapters with beautiful black and white illustrations. This makes the book easy to read and engaging from the very beginning.
