Zora and Me

Coretta Scott King Book Award Winner

Corretta Scott King Book award winner Zora and Me by Victoria Bond and T.R. Simon is a captivating book about a girl named Zora and her storytelling abilities. You don't know when she is telling the truth or if she is stretching it, but she can sure sell you her stories. While Zora has created a new story that includes a villainous shape-shifting gator man, a murder has just taken place that too closely matches the villain she created. This story pushes Zora to see the true power of pretending may bring to her and her town. The story includes theme of love, community and pride that is shared by Zora and her town Eatonville, Florida. I like this story because it captures the innocence of childhood, but the themes of friendship and togetherness through this coming-of- age story.
